How India Post tracking works

India Post records an event every time your article is scanned at a postal facility — the booking counter, the sorting hubs it passes through, the delivery office, and the point of delivery. Those scans are what a consignment number lookup shows you.

Between two scans there is no data. An article travelling overnight by train from Delhi to Guwahati is moving the whole time, but produces no update until someone scans it at the next facility. Postal tracking is not a live map: only recorded events, each tied to a place and a time.

How to track an India Post shipment

  1. Find the consignment number — on the post office receipt, on the article's label, or in the message from whoever posted it.

  2. Enter it in the tracking box above. Spaces, hyphens and lower case are fine.

  3. Submit the number to run the lookup.

  4. Read the current status: the most recent scan, with its date, time and facility.

  5. Read the history underneath to see every scan from booking onwards.

No account, nothing to install. Theguide to tracking an India Post item compares the other routes open to you — the official site, SMS and the Dak Sewa app.

Where to find your tracking number

It is printed on the receipt handed over at the post office counter when the article was booked. If somebody else posted the item — an online seller, an office, a government department — the number sits with them, usually in a confirmation SMS or email.

What the number looks like

Most trackable India Post articles use the Universal Postal Union's S10 format: two letters, an eight-digit serial, one check digit, then a two-letter country code — 13 characters.IN means it was booked in India. The opening letters point to a service category, but S10 assigns ranges rather than individual codes, so read the range as a hint:

EA–EZ
Express items, including Speed Post and EMS
RA–RZ
Registered letter post
CA–CZ
Parcel post
LA–LZ
Tracked letter post
VA–VZ
Insured letter post

India Post does not publish which specific code it uses per service. A number ending in a code other than IN was booked abroad.

What you can track

A number exists only for services India Post records individually. According to its own Dak Sewa app, that covers:

  • Speed Post, including 24 and 48 Speed Post
  • Registered Post — letters, packets and periodicals
  • Registered Parcel and Insured Parcel
  • Value Payable and Insured Value Payable articles
  • Business Parcel and Business Parcel COD
  • EMS and other international items booked through India Post
  • Electronic money orders

Ordinary post and unregistered book post carry no number and cannot be traced. If you were not given a number at booking, there is nothing to look up.

Understanding India Post tracking status

Status labels describe what was recorded, not where the article is now. Not every article shows every label — the sequence depends on the service and the route.

Item Booked
Accepted at the counter — the first scan in the journey.
Item Received
Arrived at a sorting office or transit hub.
Item Dispatched
Left a facility, heading for the next one.
In Transit
Between facilities. Long gaps are normal here.
Out for Delivery
With the delivery staff for your address today.
Item Delivered
Handed over and recorded as delivered.
Item Returned
Going back to the sender after it could not be delivered.

Why India Post tracking may not update

A tracking record changes when a tracking event is recorded, and nothing else moves it. An article can travel a long way between two scans, so a quiet record is not evidence that it has stopped.

A recently booked article may take hours to appear at all, and the tracking system is occasionally unavailable. Before assuming a problem, check the number against your receipt character by character. If it genuinely has not moved for an unusually long stretch given the distance, theguide on tracking that is not updating covers what to check and when to raise it with India Post.

What if tracking shows no record

An empty result is a statement about the database, not about your parcel. The usual causes are a mistyped character, an article booked so recently that the first scan has not reached the central system, a service that is not individually tracked, or a temporary fault at the tracking system's end.

None of those mean the article is lost. Re-check the number, give a freshly booked item time to register, then ask the booking office to confirm it was entered correctly.

How long does Speed Post take

It depends on origin, destination, the service used and conditions on the day. India Post publishes service standards for Speed Post Parcel running from 1–2 days for local articles up to 4–5 days for the rest of the country, plus a day where delivery goes through a Branch Office.

India Post frames those as average times taken, not guarantees. The exception is 24 and 48 Speed Post, introduced in March 2026 between six metro cities, which carry an explicit next-day or two-day commitment and a refund if missed. The delivery time guide gives the standards in full, with the official source.

Frequently asked questions

Enter the consignment number from your receipt in the box at the top of this page.

What is an India Post consignment number?

The identifier India Post assigns at booking — normally 13 characters, and the only way to find the article.

Where can I find my tracking number?

On the post office receipt, on the article's label, or in the sender's dispatch message.

Why is my India Post tracking not updating?

A record only changes when the article is scanned at a facility. Between facilities there is nothing to record.

Yes — paste your numbers one per line into the multiple tracking tool.
