What does “Item Dispatched” mean in India Post — and why does it go quiet?
It is moving toward its next destination by road, rail or air. There are no scans while it is in motion.
'Item Dispatched' means your article has physically left the facility named in the scan — it is loaded and on its way to the next one. What follows is the part that worries people: no scans are written while an article is between facilities, so the record keeps its last event until the receiving facility reads the article in. A quiet tracker after a dispatch scan is the normal state of a record mid-journey, not a sign that anything has gone wrong. Measure the wait against the standard published for your service rather than against the clock.
Why leaving a facility gets its own scan
Dispatch is a departure scan. When the articles bound for one destination are loaded and the vehicle or sealed receptacle leaves, the facility records the departure against each consignment number it holds, along with the office the item was sent to. From that instant the article is between two points: it has left the facility that recorded it and has not yet been read in by the one that will receive it. India Post does not track vehicles between stops, so nothing is written while the article is moving. The record therefore holds the last event written against the number until the receiving facility scans the article in — which is exactly why a status can sit on “Item Dispatched” for a stretch with nothing being wrong.

How long is too long after dispatch
A dispatch scan is followed by an arrival scan, with nothing written in between, so quiet is expected — but it is not unlimited. Dispatched is not the same as these
- Item Bagged
- Bagged is written before the item leaves, while it is being packed for the route. Dispatched is written when it actually goes.
- Item In Transit
- In Transit describes the movement itself. Dispatched records one departure from one facility, and is normally the scan that comes before it.
- Item Received
- Received is written on arrival at a facility; Dispatched is written on departure from one. They are the two ends of the same move.

Common questions about “Item Dispatched”
- How long after “Item Dispatched” should delivery happen?
- That depends on the service paid for, and the published standard runs from booking rather than from this scan: 24 Speed Post is guaranteed next day between identified metro routes, and Speed Post Parcel is published at 1–2 days local, 1–3 days metro to metro, 1–4 days state capital to state capital and 4–5 days for the rest of the country. India Post publishes no standard for Registered Post or an ordinary parcel.
- Why has my tracking stopped updating since “Item Dispatched”?
- Because the article is between facilities and nothing is recorded on the road. The next update is written when the receiving facility scans it in. If the published standard for your service has already passed with no further scan, ask the sender for the booking receipt and raise a complaint on 1800 266 6868 quoting the consignment number.
- Does “Item Dispatched” mean it is out for delivery?
- No. Dispatch means the article has left a facility on its way to the next one, and that next facility is usually a sorting hub rather than your delivery office. Out for Delivery is written much later, when the article has reached the post office that covers your address and has gone out on the round.
