India Post Customer Care
One toll-free number covers the whole country. For anything specific to your post office, India Post routes you there through a lookup tool rather than a separate regional number.
Toll-free helpline (all India)
1800 266 6868
- Call centre agents
- 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM
- IVRS (automated)
- 24/7, 365 days — except Gazetted Holidays
This is the same number for every state and union territory. India Post does not publish separate helpline numbers per state; it publishes this one national line, plus lookup tools (below) to reach your specific post office or Circle office.
Other ways to reach India Post
Find your Postmaster or Circle office
Most delivery problems are resolved fastest at the post office involved, not the national helpline. India Post's Contact Us page provides two lookup tools instead of a printed directory:
- By post office name or PIN code — finds the Postmaster / In-charge, and which Region and Circle controls that office. Use ourpincode searchfirst if you only know the area, not the exact post office name.
- By jurisdiction — finds the Chief Postmaster General (CPMG) responsible for the Circle your post office falls under.
Both tools are linked fromindiapost.gov.in/contactus.
Escalation path, in order
India Post's grievance guidelines define six levels. Start at Level 1 — going straight to the top rarely gets a faster answer and the complaint usually gets sent back down anyway.
- 1
Postmaster / In-charge of the Post Office
First point of contact — where the transaction took place.
- 2
Senior Superintendent / Superintendent of Post Offices
The Division controlling that post office.
- 3
Post Master General of the Region
If the Division does not resolve it.
- 4
Chief Postmaster General of the Circle
State/UT-level head of the postal Circle.
- 5
Postal Directorate, Dak Bhavan, New Delhi – 110001
National headquarters of the Department of Posts.
- 6
Directorate of Public Grievances (DPG), Cabinet Secretariat
Final departmental escalation, outside India Post itself.
Before you call or write
- Your consignment number — nothing can be looked up without it.
- The booking date and the booking post office, if known.
- What the tracking currently shows — checkyour tracking status first, so you can describe exactly where it's stuck.
- A registered mobile number and email, since the CRM portal and feedback form both require them.
Common questions
- Is there a different helpline number for each state?
- No. 1800 266 6868 is the single toll-free number for the whole country. What differs by location is which Postmaster, Division or Circle office handles your specific complaint — and India Post's lookup tools find that for you rather than publishing a state-by-state number list.
- What if the post office doesn't resolve my complaint?
- Move up the escalation path above — Division, then Region, then Circle, then the Postal Directorate in New Delhi, then the Directorate of Public Grievances as the final departmental level.
- Is Postal Life Insurance handled by the same helpline?
- PLI shares the same toll-free number but with different hours — 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, excluding Sundays and Gazetted Holidays — and has its own complaint email and postal address at the Directorate of Postal Life Insurance in New Delhi.
- Can I complain online instead of calling?
- Yes — the CRM portal at crm.indiapost.gov.in and the feedback form on the Contact Us page both accept written complaints, categorised by service type.
