The article has been scanned out of the post office that covers your address, by whoever is taking that round today, which means your address is on a list in someone's hands — nothing more and nothing less. India Post lists out-for-delivery among the events it sends SMS alerts for, so a text may land alongside the tracker update. A round runs in the order it runs in, and if nobody can accept the item the round carries on and the attempt is recorded.
Why this scan means someone has your address
A delivery round is a list. The post office that covers your address prepares the day's articles, sorts them by beat, and whoever takes that beat out scans them as they leave the building. The scan written at that moment is Out for Delivery, and it is the point where the record stops describing buildings and starts describing a person. India Post publishes this event among those it sends SMS alerts for, which is why the notification and the tracker entry often arrive together. Being scanned out says one thing only: the article is with a member of staff and your address is on their list for today. It says nothing about the order of the round, the time of day, or whether the handover will succeed — those are decided by the round itself, and the next entry depends on what happens at your door.

When out for delivery does not end today
One day of Out for Delivery without a delivery or attempt scan usually means the round did not reach the address that day; the article goes back to the office and out again on a later round, which is routine. What is not routine is a record that stops moving altogether. Once the published standard for the service you paid for has passed with no delivery scan and no attempt entry, stop waiting on the round: check the delivery post office, then register a complaint on 1800 266 6868 quoting the consignment number.
Out for delivery is not the same as these

- Delivered is written only when the article is handed over at the address. Out for Delivery says it has been taken out, never that it arrived.
- Delivery Attempted
- Attempted is written when the round did reach your address and could not complete the handover. It follows an Out for Delivery scan on the same day.
- Item Received
- Received is an article read in at a building. Out for Delivery means it has left a building and is on a round for your address.

Common questions about “Out for Delivery”
- Does “Out for Delivery” mean it will arrive today?
- It means your address is on the round being taken out today, which is as close to a guarantee of that as the record gives. Rounds are worked in a fixed order and the article can be the last one on it, and if nobody is available at the address the attempt is recorded and the article returns to the office. The published standards — 24 Speed Post next day, 48 Speed Post within two days, Speed Post Parcel 1–2 days local — are counted from booking rather than from this scan.
- Why does it say out for delivery but nothing arrived?
- Because the round has not reached your address yet, or it reached it and could not hand the article over; the second outcome is written as Delivery Attempted with a notice slip left behind. A round scanned out in the morning can still be working its list in the afternoon, and an article that missed a round goes out again on a later one. If the record shows Out for Delivery and then nothing at all after the published standard has passed, ask at the delivery post office or complain on 1800 266 6868.
