How to Collect a Missed India Post Delivery
India Post tried to deliver your item and could not hand it over. The item is not lost — it is either held at the delivery post office or queued for another attempt. Here is how to get it.
For what the scan itself means, seethe Delivery Attempted status.
Common reasons
What happens next
- A further delivery attempt may be made on a following working day.
- If no further attempt is scheduled, the item is held at the delivery post office for collection.
- A notice slip is usually left at the address (though this doesn't always happen in practice).
How to collect it yourself
Call your delivery post office first to confirm the item is being held there.
Go to the post office with the notice slip (if you received one) and a photo ID.
Have your tracking number ready. If it's a VPP or customs item, bring the required payment.
How long is it held?
The holding period varies by office and service type. Don't assume a fixed number of days — call the post office and ask how long they'll keep it. Collect it as soon as you can.
If the item isn't collected within the holding period, it's returned to the sender.
Preventing failed attempts
- Give a reachable phone number. Some postmen call before attempting delivery.
- Add a landmark. Especially in areas where house numbering is unclear.
- Tell the sender about access restrictions. If your building has a gate code or restricted hours, include that in the address or ask the sender to note it.
