What Speed Post is
Speed Post is India Post's express domestic service, introduced in 1986. It is the fastest option available at an ordinary post office counter, is scanned at each facility it passes through, and handles documents up to 500 g and parcels up to 35 kg.
Since March 2026 India Post has also offered 24 Speed Post and 48 Speed Post on identified routes between six metro cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad. Unlike regular Speed Post, these carry an explicit next-day or two-day commitment, OTP-confirmed delivery, and a postage refund if the commitment is missed.
Reading a Speed Post number
EE123456789IN
- EE
- Service indicator. Express items sit in the UPU S10 range EA–EZ. The specific pair within that range is allocated by India Post and is not published, so it identifies a category rather than a service.
- 12345678
- Eight-digit serial number.
- 9
- Check digit, calculated from the serial. It is what lets a mistyped number be spotted before a lookup runs.
- IN
- Country of booking — IN for India.
Several sites publish a list of exact Speed Post prefixes, and some claim the second letter encodes the booking circle or state. We could not trace either claim to an India Post or UPU source, so we leave them out rather than pass them on.
Check whether a number is well-formedSpeed Post delivery standards
India Post publishes these as service standards for Speed Post Parcel, under the heading “average time taken”:
- Local
- 1–2 days
- Metro to metro
- 1–3 days
- State capital to state capital
- 1–4 days
- Within the same state
- 1–4 days
- Rest of the country
- 4–5 days
Delivery through a Branch Office adds one further day to every category.
These are averages, not a promise. India Post describes them as average times taken. The only Speed Post services sold with a delivery guarantee are 24 and 48 Speed Post on their identified metro routes. For regular Speed Post, India Post's published remedy for a delay is a refund of the Speed Post charges.
If your Speed Post is running late
Check the last scan. If it moved within the last couple of days it is in transit, and the standards above tell you whether it is genuinely overdue for the route.
Confirm the destination. An address served by a Branch Office gets an extra day, and remote routes routinely run past the averages.
If it is past the standard for its route with no recent scan, contact the booking post office with your receipt and ask them to trace it.
Call India Post on 1800 266 6868 with the consignment number to hand. Agents are available 8am to 8pm.
Register a complaint on the India Post portal if the office cannot resolve it, and ask about a refund of the Speed Post charges where the delay warrants it.
